HOVERING NEAR THE outer edges of sleep, mind calm as the music brought back memories of his youth, Mike was pulled back to full consciousness when the car suddenly stopped. On instinct, his hands shot out, stopping his body from flying into the dashboard.
“What’s wrong?”
“We’ve got a problem.”
Raking a hand across his face, Mike blinked twice while looking out through the dirty windshield, heart racing from fear as he searched for the undead. Rather than seeing corpses, he realized the road was blocked by at least ten vehicles mangled together about thirty yards up ahead.
Glancing to the right, he caught a glimpse of the road sign. They were at the intersection of Highway 14 and 412, a few miles away from Ridgedale.
“I don’t see anythin’ movin’.”
As the car idled, Trent turned off the music and flicked the high beams on, pointing to the left. He rolled down the window a crack. The interior filled with frigid air.
“Look closer. There’s somebody trapped under the tire of that silver SUV.”
“Shit. I can’t tell from here whether he’s alive or reanimated. Can you?”
“No, I can’t. But wait! Do you hear that? He’s beggin’ for help. Dead people can’t talk.”
“True, but it doesn’t matter. There’s no way we can offer assistance. There’s another car damn near on top of the SUV. Even with two jacks, we can’t move both vehicles to free him. Even if we could by some of that divine intervention you believe in, then what? It’s not like we can cart the guy to a hospital. He’s on borrowed time.”
Trent shifted his gaze over to Mike, shocked by the callousness of the words. “My, how attitudes change in the blink of an eye. I seem to recall you mentioned you split up with Walt’s group because you weren’t ready to let go of the old ways.”
Mike snorted. “Yeah, and I also told you what happened after Jackson and I tried to play heroes to a woman and her kid. Worst decision I ever made, so I won’t do it again.”
“Fine. Then you stay here, and I’ll go.” Trent rummaged around under the seat, extracting a bottle of water. “It’s not right to leave him in misery. It won’t set right with me to just turn a blind eye to someone in need, and if I had any left, I wouldn’t want my loved one to be all alone in the dark durin’ his or her last moments on earth.”
“Trent, wait!”
Mike’s plea didn’t stop Trent from exiting the car. He watched in stunned awe as the old man held a pistol in front of him with one hand, the other clutching the water, legs pumping at full speed as he neared the wreckage.
“I’ll be damned but the man’s got balls of steel. No, a brain full of rocks!”
Mike looked at the empty driver’s seat. For a few seconds, he contemplated sliding behind the wheel. Trent was being a stubborn fool, and his hubris would end up getting him killed. Mike couldn’t bear the thought of watching him die—or worse—if there were rotting corpses hiding in the shadows.
